For nearly two decades, Filipino viewers of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) have been fascinated not just by the drama inside the famous yellow house, but also by the mystery surrounding the man behind the authoritative voice that guides housemates through their journey: “Kuya.” The question of who exactly voices Big Brother has fueled speculations, memes, and online debates. And at the center of those speculations stands Laurenti “Lauren” Dyogi, ABS-CBN’s Head of TV Production and the original producer of PBB.
This week, in an exclusive interview with veteran journalist Rico Hizon for ANC’s Beyond the Exchange, Dyogi finally addressed the decades-old rumor once and for all: he is not, and has never been, the voice of Big Brother.

The Speculation That Wouldn’t Go Away
From the very first season of Pinoy Big Brother in 2005, Dyogi’s association with the show has been undeniable. Known as one of the key figures who brought the Dutch reality franchise to the Philippines, Dyogi became synonymous with the program itself. His creative direction and production expertise helped transform PBB into a cultural phenomenon, one that introduced ordinary Filipinos into overnight celebrities and birthed some of the country’s most enduring showbiz names.
Because of his deep involvement and commanding presence within ABS-CBN, many viewers began to suspect that he might also be the man behind the microphone. Dyogi admitted that he has heard these rumors countless times.
“Ever since, they’ve associated me with being Big Brother because I was the original producer of the show,” Dyogi explained. “But I cannot be. They say my voice is the same as Kuya, but I cannot be inside the house 24/7. So it cannot be me.”
His denial sheds light on a long-running myth—one that may finally put an end to whispers and online debates about his supposed double identity.
The Voice of Authority: Why the Mystery Matters
Part of the magic of Pinoy Big Brother lies in its immersive setup. The unseen “Kuya” is not just a narrator but a constant guiding presence. For housemates, Kuya is a mentor, disciplinarian, and confidante. For audiences, his voice is the symbol of authority, fairness, and control within the game.
The decision to keep the true identity of the voice actor secret adds to the mystique of the show. In the Philippine context, this secrecy has become a vital part of the program’s allure. Fans pore over interviews, behind-the-scenes clips, and accidental audio slips, hoping to catch even a small clue.
That Dyogi’s voice bore resemblance to Kuya’s only intensified the curiosity. But as the producer pointed out, his responsibilities behind the scenes made it logistically impossible for him to assume the role. His clarification allows fans to separate the producer from the character and to appreciate the intentional design of keeping Kuya’s identity hidden.
Two Decades of Success Against All Odds
The interview with Rico Hizon did not just tackle the Kuya speculation—it also celebrated Pinoy Big Brother’s remarkable 20th anniversary. Since its debut in August 2005, the show has continued to captivate Filipinos across generations.
This longevity is impressive given the turbulent circumstances ABS-CBN has faced in recent years. In 2020, the network’s congressional franchise was not renewed, leading to the shutdown of its free-to-air broadcast. Add to that the global COVID-19 pandemic, which brought severe restrictions on production and movement.
Despite these hurdles, PBB survived.
“We are celebrating our 20th this August,” Dyogi proudly shared. “Even our format owners are very happy that we were able to sustain a format like Big Brother for 20 years, in spite of what happened with us—with the non-renewal of the franchise and, at the same time, with the pandemic. We were still able to consistently produce it.”
For Dyogi, the ability of the show to not only endure but thrive amid adversity speaks volumes about the loyalty of its audience and the adaptability of the production team.
The Secret Formula: Authenticity and Housemates
What is it about Pinoy Big Brother that keeps audiences coming back, season after season? Dyogi believes the answer lies in authenticity.
Filipinos, he says, are naturally curious—sometimes bordering on being “chismoso” (gossipy). The format of PBB, which revolves around observing the real lives, conflicts, and triumphs of housemates, taps into this cultural trait.
“Nature natin chismoso tayo,” Dyogi explained candidly. “We want to know about other people’s lives. And I think the format is appropriate for what audiences today are looking for: authenticity. The concept of Big Brother really brings out the true and authentic self of every housemate inside the house.”
According to him, the key to PBB’s sustained relevance lies in its casting. Each batch of housemates introduces fresh dynamics, surprising personalities, and relatable stories. Whether it’s a student striving for a better life, an overseas Filipino worker longing for family, or a young dreamer chasing stardom, viewers see themselves reflected in the housemates’ journeys.
“The key of Big Brother is really the set of housemates,” Dyogi emphasized. “They are the heart of the show.”
A Cultural Phenomenon Beyond Television
Over the years, Pinoy Big Brother has become more than just a reality TV show. It has served as a launchpad for some of the country’s brightest stars: Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, James Reid, Maymay Entrata, and many more all began their careers inside Kuya’s house.
The show’s influence extends beyond entertainment—it mirrors Filipino society, highlighting issues such as family struggles, social inequality, generational clashes, and even political awareness. Episodes that showcased heartfelt stories or controversial debates often spilled into national conversations, proving the program’s deep impact.
Its 20-year milestone underscores not just its survival but also its transformation into a cultural touchstone. Even in the era of social media, streaming platforms, and shortened attention spans, PBB remains relevant. In fact, its presence on digital platforms has allowed it to engage with younger audiences who consume content differently from the first generation of fans.
Looking Forward: The Future of Big Brother
As Pinoy Big Brother enters its third decade, questions linger about how it will continue to evolve. Can it maintain its authenticity in an age where reality shows compete with viral TikTok trends and curated Instagram personas?
Dyogi remains optimistic. He points to the show’s proven adaptability as proof of its resilience. Whether through changes in format, integration of digital voting systems, or partnerships with online platforms, PBB has consistently found ways to stay ahead.
“Our ability to develop a new audience has been crucial,” Dyogi said. “Every new generation discovers the show in their own way. And as long as people continue to look for authentic human stories, Big Brother will always have a place.”
Conclusion: Clearing the Air, Strengthening the Legacy
With Lauren Dyogi’s clarification, one of the longest-standing speculations in Philippine entertainment may finally be laid to rest. He is not the voice of Kuya—his role has always been behind the cameras, shaping and steering Pinoy Big Brother into the phenomenon it is today.
As the show celebrates 20 years of success, Dyogi’s message resonates: authenticity, adaptability, and the unique mix of housemates are the real reasons PBB has stood the test of time. The mystery of Kuya’s voice may continue to intrigue fans, but perhaps that is precisely the point. After all, some secrets are best left as part of the magic.
