Isang ordinaryong gabi sa UAE ang naging simula ng isang pangyayaring magpapabago sa buhay ng isang Pinay OFW — isang insidenteng hindi inaasahan, puno ng takot, hiwaga, at kawalan ng kaligtasan.

Isang Filipina bilang kasambahay sa Dubai ang nagtayog ng alarma nang lumaganap ang video na kuha ng kanyang mga pasa at sugat. Ayon sa ulat ng GMA News, ang biktima na si Maria Sigrid Sanchez Santos ay nagsumbong sa kanyang mga kaanak sa Pilipinas dahil sa umano’y pagmamaltrato ng kanyang amo. Ipinakita sa larawan ang matinding pasa sa kanyang likod, sinabing kinulong, hindi pinapakain nang tama, at kulang sa sahod — kasabay pa ang pagkuha sa kanyang pasaporte, dokumento, at cellphone.
Dahil dito, ikinulong sa Dubai ang kanyang amo at tatlong iba pa kaugnay sa kanyang pagkamatay. Tinulungan din ng OWWA ang pamilya at nangako ang konsulado na hahabulin ang hustisya at maipauwi ang labi.
Ito ay isa lamang sa maramihang kaso ng abuse sa OFWs sa UAE. Noong 2010, muling bumukas ang kaso ng isang Pinay helper sa Sharjah, si Marialyn Vinluan, na nakatanggap ng matinding pananakit mula sa kanyang amo. Nahirapan siyang makakuha ng kompensasyon at nagdusa ng physical at mental trauma bago naresolba ang kanyang kaso. Bukod dito, nangangalamba ang Migrante-Middle East sa pamemeke ng kontrata, labis na oras ng trabaho, at verbal at sexual abuse laban sa mga OFWs lalo na sa cleaning services sector.
Sa kabilang banda, makapangyarihan pa rin ang sistema. Ilang Pinay OFWs ang naipit sa scam—na-isyuhan ng malaking halaga para sa visa processing na sa huli, ninakaw lamang ng iba’t ibang tao. At may mga OFW na nahatulan pa ng death sentence, tulad ni Jennifer Dalquez, pero pinatawad sa huli at umuwi nang ligtas matapos matulungan ng gobyern
